North Bay Village Is Getting Its First Publix at Shoma Bay
North Bay Village is about to add something residents have anticipated for years: its first Publix supermarket.
The new grocery store will anchor Shoma Bay, the mixed-use development under construction at 1850 John F. Kennedy Causeway. Positioned near the western entrance to the Village, the project will place a major supermarket directly along the corridor connecting mainland Miami, North Bay Village, and Miami Beach.
For residents, the most meaningful feature may not be found inside one of Shoma Bay’s luxury condominiums. It may simply be the convenience of picking up groceries, ordering dinner, or making a quick Publix run without leaving the Village.
A 35,000-Square-Foot Publix on the Causeway
Plans call for a 35,037-square-foot Publix at the base of Shoma Bay. The development is expected to include 333 condominium residences across 24 stories, along with additional retail and dining spaces. Shoma Bay’s published project materials identify the supermarket as the development’s primary retail anchor.
Although the location will be smaller than some suburban Publix stores, its urban footprint is substantial for North Bay Village. The store is expected to serve not only Shoma Bay residents but also the wider community, including people living on Treasure Island, Harbor Island, and North Bay Island.
Publix has not yet publicly confirmed the store’s specific departments or services. Details such as a pharmacy, liquor store, curbside pickup, or expanded prepared-food offerings remain unknown.
When Will the North Bay Village Publix Open?
Earlier announcements targeted a 2026 opening for both the Publix and Shoma Bay residences. More recent reporting indicates that the supermarket and development could open in late 2026 or early 2027. Construction schedules can change, particularly with large mixed-use projects, so residents should consider the current timeline an estimate until Publix or the development team announces an official opening date.
What the New Publix Could Mean for Residents
The arrival of Publix represents more than another retail opening. North Bay Village currently has smaller neighborhood markets and convenience stores, but the new location would introduce a large, full-service supermarket within the municipality.
That could reduce the need for residents to travel to Miami Beach or the mainland for routine grocery shopping. It may also create new jobs, attract additional customers to nearby businesses, and bring more pedestrian activity to the western end of Treasure Island.
However, the store will also introduce practical considerations. Grocery deliveries, customer parking, pedestrian access, and additional traffic along the already busy Kennedy Causeway will need to be carefully managed. The success of the location will depend not only on what happens inside the store, but also on how comfortably it fits into the surrounding neighborhood.
A Symbol of North Bay Village’s Transformation
Shoma Bay is part of a broader wave of development reshaping North Bay Village. New residential towers, restaurants, public improvements, and waterfront projects are gradually transforming the community into one of Miami-Dade County’s most closely watched island neighborhoods.
Many of these developments emphasize luxury living, resort-style amenities, and panoramic Biscayne Bay views. Publix adds something more practical to that equation: an everyday service that can benefit the entire community.
The multimillion-dollar residences may attract the headlines, but for many locals, the most important change will be much simpler. Soon, a grocery run may no longer require leaving North Bay Village.
