The Latham Community Center is North Bay Village’s new gathering place, built to serve every generation from toddlers to seniors. Officially named the Brent W. Latham Community Center, it sits on Galleon Street on Treasure Island, right next to Treasure Island Elementary School.

Here is what residents need to know about the center, its amenities, and the man whose name it carries.

From Groundbreaking to Grand Opening in One Year

Construction on the Latham Community Center began in June 2025. In roughly twelve months, the project went from an empty site to a completed building and campus.

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, hundreds of residents filled Galleon Street for the grand opening celebration. The event featured food, music, and family activities, supported by 38 sponsors and more than 30 vendors. Mayor Rachel Streitfeld, Vice Mayor Goran Cuk, and Commissioners Doris Acosta, Richard Chervony, and Andy Daro attended, along with Mayor Emeritus Brent Latham. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Micky Steinberg and School Board Member Joseph S. Geller also joined.

What the Latham Community Center Offers

The Village describes the center as a hub for all ages. The campus includes:

  • A professional 11-on-11 soccer field and four multi-purpose fields
  • Two padel courts and four pickleball courts
  • Six indoor activity areas for recreational programming
  • A rooftop event space with a ground-floor café
  • A recreational trail and exercise path
  • Two community parks, including the North Bay Village Peace Park, a quiet space for reflection

The center will also host after-school programming for Village residents and Treasure Island Elementary students. North Bay Village has partnered with the Argentine Football Association on soccer programming, and youth offerings include tot soccer, free Saturday youth soccer, and a competitive recreational league.

How Residents Can Use the Latham Community Center

After the grand opening celebration, the Village shared an update on the remaining steps before the building fully opens its doors. Those steps include final punch-list work on electrical, plumbing, and fixtures; a final Certificate of Occupancy from the county; and furnishing the indoor spaces. The building operated for a period under a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy with limited access.

Outdoor sports were scheduled to open first. According to the Village’s update, the soccer fields and the padel and pickleball courts are managed by PFL and booked through the Playtomic app. Residents can play free of charge in groups: a minimum of eight people for soccer and four for padel or pickleball. For soccer, call 305-680-6589; for padel and pickleball, call 305-680-6271.

The Village also announced a request for proposals (RFP) for instructors and program providers to offer classes for all ages. For the latest schedule and opening dates, check the official Latham Community Center update from North Bay Village.

Who Is Brent Latham?

The center honors Brent W. Latham, who was elected mayor of North Bay Village in the fall of 2018 and now holds the title of Mayor Emeritus. Born and raised in South Florida, Latham moved to the Village permanently in 2014 with his wife and two children.

Before local office, Latham built a career with an international scope. He worked on Capitol Hill and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Central America focused on small business development. He managed United Nations projects in West Africa and led an education and youth development nonprofit in South America. He also worked in sports communications for ESPN, FIFA, and Miami-based Concacaf, which fits a center built around soccer and recreation.

Latham holds a master’s degree in international relations from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. As a Fulbright Scholar, he also earned a master’s in international business administration from Instituto de Empresa in Madrid. He speaks English and Spanish fluently and is proficient in Portuguese and French. His profile with the Florida League of Mayors highlights his belief that the Village’s strength lies in the diversity and resilience of its residents.

More Green Space on the Way

The Latham Community Center is part of a broader push for public space in North Bay Village. The Village has announced two more green spaces planned for 2026: Ansin Family Park and a new park on West Treasure Drive.

For a Village made up of islands, where open land is scarce, the Latham Community Center is a major investment in quality of life. It gives neighbors a place to play, learn, and meet each other.
